"Ray of Sun Crochet" and me, Bonnie
As a kid...
Growing up, I was the homebody kid always found with yarn in one hand and a crochet hook in the other. I wasn't drawn to sports—instead, I immersed myself in yarn and crochet projects that let my creativity flow. While I did take piano lessons and learned the flute at school, nothing captivated me quite like the art of crochet. I would often lose myself in the rhythmic motion of weaving yarn into intricate patterns, much like piecing together a delightful puzzle. This love of the craft laid the foundation for a lifelong journey into the world of crochet, where every new project was a chance to create something uniquely beautiful.
From crochet to science...
After trade school, I worked in a technical, clinical environment - not expected of someone so crafty and creative. I still crocheted as a hobby, but everything changed when healthcare cutbacks led to a sudden job loss. Facing unemployment, I became self-employed, freelancing in my technical field. During that time, my wheels started turning about creating a crochet pattern business. I began creating my own designs, but didn't know how market them or get them to people who may desire them. And were my designs even good enough? I had many self-doubts about my crochet dreams and simply carried it on as a hobby. The business idea was placed on the back burner.
Then finally, I cracked the code...
After a few years on the road with my technical business, I decided to give it up, opting for a 9-5 office job. I've remained in the job for well over a decade but then reached another turning point! I happened to stumble upon something called "digital marketing." It caught my eye on social media and I attended a free webinar that sparked my curiosity even further. Before I knew it, I was diving into a course covering search engines, social media marketing, email automation, online advertising and AI! For over the past year, I have immersed myself in learning these strategies, and today I’m applying them to finally running an online business as a crochet pattern designer.
Today, my business is set up from home - where creativity thrives..!
I'm a true homebody and I love that I'm finally channeling my digital marketing know-how into the crochet journey I've always dreamed of, right from my living room. I'm eager to blend my passion for crochet with the digital skills I've acquired to bring my customers the patterns they desire.
